Rheology and Surface Modifiers

  Food packaging - printing inks

Cray Valley's range of CRAYVALLAC® coating modifiers has been developed to help formulators improve the performance of water-based, solvent-free and solvent-based coatings. These modifiers are divided into two categories:

  • Rheology Modifiers for the control of flow, sedimentation and sag resistance.
  • Surface Modifiers for the control of surface lubricity and appearance.

Rheology Modifiers

The CRAYVALLAC® rheology modifiers perform best in solvent-based ink applications, provided that sufficient processing freedom is available to allow for efficient activation. The use of these rheology modifiers enables the ink formulator to better control the flow characteristics of their products during the application process. To assist the formulator in choosing the most appropriate rheology modifier, we have provided the following two Acrobat readable files. These two documents give specific details regarding the suitability of the CRAYVALLAC® range of rheology modifiers in ink applications:

For more product specific information regarding the CRAYVALLAC® range of rheology modifiers, please select the appropriate product bulletin from the following list:

CRAYVALLAC SF: Micronised amide modified castor wax with very good solvent resistance.
CRAYVALLAC SUPER: Versatile micronised amide modifier.
CRAYVALLAC 60X: Oxidised polyethylene paste in xylene.
CRAYVALLAC LA-100: Pourable urea-based liquid modifier for post-addition.

Surface Modifiers

Cray Valley's range of CRAYVALLAC® surface modifiers are based on polyethylene, polypropylene and PTFE technologies. These products are widely used in inks applications for the enhancement of surface lubricity. The CRAYVALLAC® surface modifiers are available in two physical forms, micronised powders and easy to handle water-based/solvent-based dispersions. CRAYVALLAC® surface modifiers are suitable for use in both liquid inks and paste inks where they provide the formulator with the following surface enhancements:

  • Slip, mar, scrub and rub resistance.
  • Anti-blocking and solvent resistance.
  • Enhanced heat resistance.

Due to the pre-wetted and pre-dispersed nature of the CRAYVALLAC® dispersions, they are often easier to handle and incorporate in coatings. Compared to these, the CRAYVALLAC® micronised powders, although also suitable for most applications, generally require additional care during incorporation.
